Are you worried about age catching up with you?

Are you worried about inflammation or "Something that runs in the family" affecting your quality of life?

I’m going to tell you something that your friends and family may not think is possible.

You can start, no matter how old you are or what ailments you have, living the life that will allow you to avoid a medicine cabinet full of prescription bottles and a pill box bigger than your dinner plate.

However, it is YOUR job to ask the questions that will help you reach old age without a multitude of prescriptions, each with their own side effect, and with the worry of possible drug interactions.

Yup. That’s right. It’s YOUR job. It’s not your doctor’s job, and it’s not your spouse’s job, and it’s not your kids’ job.

While friends and family can support you in this quest, and your doctor should be receptive to your questions and goals, it is up to YOU to advocate for yourself first.

Note: The information on this page is not medical advice and should not replace medical advice. Speak to your doctor about all health concerns and before taking action based on anyone’s health education, including mine. See my full disclaimer here.

Your body is amazing, and your body has within it’s blood vessels and organs it’s own pharmacy that can keep you healthy, as long as you support it to do so with healthy lifestyle, exercise, attitude, and nutrition.

That is the LEAN Health Coaching model, and the training I received through the Dr. Sears Wellness Institute.

I also have training in Prime Time Health, including the “Skills and Pills Mindset,” which is the approach of including lifestyle changes anytime your doctor starts talking about a new prescription for you.

To help get your mind wrapped around how this approach works check out the following examples. (These examples are found in Dr. Sear’s Prime Time Health book.)

If your doctor is worried about your cholesterol, you should start by asking your doctor about changing to plant based diet, increasing your consumption of omega-3 fats, and increasing moderate exercise. Also make sure your doctor is looking at cholesterol RATIOS, not just overall numbers.

If your doctor mentions blood pressure medicine, the first questions should be reducing sodium or losing weight (or both).  Consuming less sodium and losing ten pounds reduces the need for blood pressure lowering medicine by 53%.

If cancer is a concern or if you know you need to lose weight, talk to your doc about eating more fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seafood… the three best dietary habits to protect against cancer and maintain a healthy weight.

There is also a thread that ties together a large number of ailments and disease, at all stages of life.

Whenever you hear of a disease that ends in “–itis”, it is a disease of inflammation.

And often it is a disease of inflammation even if it DOESN’T end in “-itis.”

In fact, heart disease, arthritis, cancer, diabetes…are all being linked to inflammation.

So how does inflammation tie these diseases together, and how do we reduce it?

Inflammation is the body’s signal that something is wrong. It is how your body is alerted to send help. Imagine a cut finger, turning red and “inflamed”. Soon your body sends white blood cells and other helpers to heal it.

But when healthy body parts become inflamed, they get stiff, sticky, and irritated. You experience pain, as in migraines and arthritis, and you become susceptible to disease.

Too much processed food, like fried food, refined flour, trans fats, and excess sugar cause inflammation throughout the body.

On the other hand, eating more fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seafood and incorporating exercise and stress relief can all reduce inflammation.

While the answer is simple, it isn’t always easy.

If it was easy, we wouldn’t have so many people relying on prescription drugs to manage their ailments. We’d be preventing them with healthy lifestyle, exercise, attitude, and nutrition!

The good  news is that your body is deigned to heal itself, and once you implement the lifestyle changes to support health, your body will begin it’s amazing recovery process!
